Jason the Major brakes will do fine, I can hardly tell the difference from them and the discs.

I use my car as a daily so I went for discs but I never really noticed any fade with the Majors on.

The advance would certainly be my first check, as points plugs etc were changed it is very easy to move a distributor unwittingly, it is so easy to test the advance and then at least you can rule that ...

Might be worth checking or advancing it a bit, I had this problem after new points plugs etc and advancing or retarding it a bit solved it.
I think I had to advance it quite a bit actually.
