Managed some time with my son is his shed today and did a test fit of escort engine and 5 speed celica.
slot in bell housing for steering rack.

Nice clearence of side drafts and lever shock housing.

Box sits well.

Not much room between rail and bell housing, may have to trim a little alloy.

Will have to use inertia starter.

G'day

Welcome to our little community.
What Escort engine are you using?
What state of tune etc?
What are the plans for the rest of the car?
More pictures and information is always good.
I am sure an escort has been done before but they are not common, so more please.

Cheers
Graham

Hi Graham
Currently using "1100" escort engine (to stay within NSW RTA 15%rule). Eye Rolls
Already made disc brake conversion using (surprise surprise) escort 2.0 hub, disc and calliper (see earlier post) not fitted to ute yet.
Rear axle from (you guessed it) escort to be installed. We have already made up narrow saddles (about inch and half wide from memory) for Morris springs to weld on axle case, once axle position and angle is known (after gearbox and engine position is finalised). Interestingly Morris Minor has wider chassis rail position than Escort and the axle widths in within a bugs whisker of each other.
Rear brake will stay std escort drum, thinking, ute light on rear (its a timber table top) with little chance of ever being loaded with anything bigger than his dog and lunch esky.
Regards
Hendo

Hi Hendo,

I have a set of Escort/Sierra discs fitted to the front of my panel van and have discovered that they are bigger than Torana and Corolla discs which pushes the track out beyond the maximum allowable limit. If you have to get engineered and the engineer has the presence of mind to check your track width, you need to be between 1285 and 1310 mm. I am still having trouble getting through and with a helluva lot of fiddling and machining, I have got it down to at last to 1308 mm, so hopefully, I should make it this time.

Boeing Bob.

Hi Bob
That’s interesting, which part is the track measurement taken from? is it outer rim edge to outer rim edge?
Before I modified the escort hub I did a "line of sight" comparison of the hubs flat on the bench, taking into account the stop position of the inner bearings on both type hubs, but did not take an accurate measurement of wheel mount position, as I was only looking at bearing positions. I had better check total track width. Embarassed

I suspect the Escort brakes that Bob is using is from a later Escort, more than likely the MkIII front wheel drive cars that we didn't see in Australia, so they could well be different from what you're using Hendo.

G'day

Track width increase is not to be any more than 25mm.
Track is measured from the centre of the tyre to centre of tyre.
The biggest problem seems to be when you fit disks and wide rims, getting enough clearance back inside to keep the track legal.
I used 15" rims which makes it marginally easier

Cheers

oops dont know whats happened to the previous pics, just loaded some more and managed to wipe out the others. all pics now thumbnails for some reason. I hope Iam better with cars than I am with computers!!!

settled on engine position and made up mounts based on old truck gearbox mts I had in the shed.

Just measured the height and cut.

have made a little more room for oil filter and sump, have also put 4" plate under mount and bolted through chassis flanges as per the orignal morris (just forgot to take happy snap).
The gearbox came with a xmenber attached and all we had to do was extend the centre section by 50mm directly under mount. (again no happy snap but I will get more pics the next time I am round at the moggy shed)

Cant believe it been a whole year since we started this conversion. Lots of stuff happened in the year and not much on the car. will post some pics of the progress in the next day or so, when I read up about posting pics again.

My uncle had a couple of minors, and from memory they didnt stop very well with 850s, hopefully the escort disc and drum combo will work for us.

Minors were never renowned for their brakes, good brakes certainly makes them more relaxed to drive apart from being safer.
